I was born in Los Angeles and raised in East Hollywood. I spent my grade school years in Ramona Elementary, Le Conte Middle School, and Hollywood High. I graduated from California State University at Los Angeles, where I earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics and a second degree in Business Administration. I also completed my California Teaching Credential at CSULA.
I come from a working-class family. My parents immigrated to Los Angeles from Guatemala in the early 80s. My parents did not have the opportunities that I had, and they made sure that I took advantage of them. They instilled in me the importance and power of education. It is that power that I want to share with my students.
I have the privilege of working in the neighborhood that I grew up in. I can relate to my students and their struggles. I am a product of LAUSD and attended the same schools that many of my students attended. I would like to think that I would have been an APEX student if this school was established sooner.
